Acrylic Stamps Vs. Rubber Stamps

I'm asked this question a lot when you see the number of unmounted stamps that are appearing in the marketplace. I personally own many types of stamps and they all have their place and usefulness. What are the advantages to the clear acrylic stamps and rubber unmounted ones? Well, here is my take:

  • You have the ability to see through the clear acrylic stamps so you can be more accurate with the placement of the image. This can be very advantageous when stamping alphabet letters.

  • Unmounted stamps are very economical whether they are clear acrylic or rubber as you are not purchasing the mounting mechanisms (wood mounts & rubber)  You can buy acrylic and rubber stamps unmounted. You can usually purchase from 10 - 20 images on a sheet for around $15 - $20 per set.

  • Storing unmounted stamps is easy as there are no wood mounts to deal with nice and thin and flat! You can keep your unmounted stamps together stored on a piece of heavy mylar.

  • Cleaning them is basically the same as your regular rubber stamps.

  • On the down side, I don't find the clear  acrylic stamps to have the same fine detail as rubber stamps so if you are looking for very detailed image - choose rubber stamps for this.

If you are using acrylic or rubber stamps mounted on acrylic blocks you will find that you don't have the benefit of a sponge layer to cushion your stamping. You will find that you don't need as much as pressure when you are stamping. Also try using a piece of fun foam under your paper to get clearer images.

There are many images that I treasure that can only be found on wood mounted stamps. I will continue to use all kinds in my creative endeavours. But I must admit I have found some amazing images on unmounted rubber and acrylic stamps. So far, my favorite for unmounted stamps is from See-Dee's. They continue to make great images at very economical prices.  Here are some of the latest Mini stamps in the store from See-Dee's.  Priced at only $1.98 each - they are a steal!
